Orientalism, Edward W. Said

This book fundamentally reshaped how we understand the relationship between the Western and Eastern worlds. Written with both academic and intellectual bravery, and still relevant after nearly three decades since it was published.

Said is best known for describing and critiquing "Orientalism", which he perceived as a constellation of false assumptions underlying Western attitudes toward the East. He keeps his arguments relatively in the present, at least, from the perspective of the way the current eyes of the Occidental view the Oriental. He mainly discusses how the legacies of fairly recent Empires, namely the British powers, have contributed to this lasting effect.

This book isn't just about simple misrepresentations; Said shows how a vast body of Western knowledge about the East was intricately tied to, and often served to justify, colonial expansion and political dominance.

Orientalism by Edward Said is as important and relevant today as it's ever been.
